Louis Jack is one of the more elusive UK rap talents, although the standard that he delivers is always so high. With the newest release ‘Ivy’, the Bristol artist once again proves that it’s all about quality over quantity. For the first minute of ‘Ivy’, we’re submerged in electronica which showcases Louis Jack’s lesser talked about production skills, before a sudden drop of silence announces the arrival of the rapper’s recognisable baritone. These rap verses are more like spoken word; concise poetic lines of love and uncertainty. As with previous List Pick ‘It’s Your Love’, Jack is dipping his toe into pop with a nod to the likes of radio-ready troubadours The Weeknd and Drake through those auto-tuned vocals. Despite this subtle pop hint, Louis Jack’s penchant for avant-garde production and dark-side-of-the-moon songwriting is still what sets this young artist apart from the rest. - Hannah Thacker
